Vietnam Teaching Contracts: Red Flags and Questions to Ask

A teaching offer in Vietnam can advertise an attractive hourly rate while leaving the real monthly income unclear. Before signing, teachers should examine guaranteed hours, unpaid duties, work authorization, probation, tax, insurance, leave and termination terms together.

Confirm the legal employer

The school brand, campus and company named in the contract may not be identical. Ask which legal entity pays salary and sponsors the work permit. The employer should be an eligible organization, and the position should match the work-permit application.

Vietnam's government states that foreign workers generally require a work permit unless a specific exemption applies. Decree 219/2025 updated the application process from August 7, 2025, including a ten-working-day decision period after a valid dossier is received.

Hourly rate is not guaranteed income

For hourly roles, calculate realistic monthly pay using guaranteed teaching hours—not the maximum schedule. Clarify whether teachers are paid for cancellations, public holidays, training, meetings, lesson preparation, placement tests, reports and travel between campuses.

For salaried roles, confirm whether the amount is gross or net, what deductions apply, the payroll date and how overtime is calculated.

Examine probation carefully

The contract should state probation length, probation salary, evaluation standards and what happens if either party ends the relationship. Do not accept a vague promise that the "full contract" will be issued after unpaid training or trial teaching.

Work-permit responsibilities

The contract or written offer should identify who collects, legalizes and translates documents; who pays government, health-check and authentication costs; when the application will be filed; and whether costs can be recovered from final salary.

Never assume a tourist or business visa authorizes teaching. A statement that paperwork will be handled later is not a substitute for legal authorization.

Notice and termination

Check whether the contract is fixed-term, its start and end dates, the required notice from both sides, lawful termination grounds and any repayment clause. Vietnam's Labor Code provides rules for ending employment contracts; a contract should not be read in isolation from the law.

Ask for financial obligations to be specific and documented. Open-ended penalties, automatic loss of all final salary or undefined "training costs" deserve careful scrutiny.

Benefits that need definitions

Do not treat words such as housing, insurance, airfare or paid leave as complete benefits. Ask:

  • Is housing provided or reimbursed, and is a deposit required?
  • What does medical insurance cover and when does coverage begin?
  • Is airfare paid upfront or after completing the contract?
  • Are school closures and public holidays paid?
  • How many days of annual and sick leave are paid?
  • Is mandatory social insurance applicable to the contract?

Vietnam Social Security states that foreign employees with fixed-term employment contracts of at least 12 months generally participate in mandatory social insurance, subject to stated exceptions.

Ten questions before signing

  1. What is the legal employer's full name?
  2. What monthly income is actually guaranteed?
  3. Which duties are unpaid?
  4. Who sponsors and pays for the work permit?
  5. When may teaching legally begin?
  6. Is salary gross or net?
  7. What insurance and leave are included?
  8. What notice must each side give?
  9. What deductions may be taken from final salary?
  10. Which campus and schedule are guaranteed?

Keep the signed contract, offer, job description and benefits schedule. Request written clarification when the contract conflicts with recruitment messages. For an individual dispute or legal interpretation, consult a qualified Vietnamese employment professional.
